Young Adult Library Services Promotes Teen Reading

The Young Adult Library Services Association publishes the blog "The Hub" (, promoting teen reading. Daily posts feature reader's advisory for new titles, reflections on great reads of the past, and, recently, an online reading contest titled "YALSA's Hub Reading Challenge."

The challenge is to read 25 titles by midnight, June 22, from a list of 80-plus high interest fiction and non-fiction titles that appeal to teens, selected from several national award lists. Search for the blog post and follow the link to the contest rules.

Story Time meets 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for age 2 and 10:30 a.m. Thursday for ages 3-5 for stories, songs and more; this week is "Valentines!" Bring your own cards.

Family Fun Time 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Meet at the library for make and take crafts, story and a snack.

Knitting & crochet group meets 4-5 p.m. Monday to work on projects and improve skills.


Brown Bag Music Program noon today. Local students perform, bring lunch, the library provides water and soft drinks.

Mad Hatter Tea Party for ages 6-8, 4 p.m. today. A very merry un-birthday to you, celebrating Lewis Carroll's birthday (Jan. 27, 1832). Themed games, stories and a cartoon. Decorate a hat and wear it to the party; most creative hat wins a prize.

Story Time for ages 3-5 meets 10 a.m. Wednesday with Miss Melissa for stories, finger plays, music and films.

Book Babies for ages 18 months-2 meets 10 a.m. Thursday with Miss Melissa for nursery rhymes, finger plays, music, and bubbles.

Teen Anti-Valentine's Day Jeopardy, 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Enjoy a clever take on the classic "Jeopardy" game, celebrate "Single's Awareness Day;" refreshments and fun included.

"Toddler Time" meets 10 a.m. Wednesdays for a fun introduction to books, finger plays, action songs, and rhymes.

The Latt Maxcy Memorial Library Annual Art Show runs through March 8.

For the 29th year, the library hosts AARP Free Tax Help Monday and Thursday mornings 8:30-11:30 a.m., and Monday evenings 4:30-7 p.m.


Storytime for preschool kids meets 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. today, also 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for stories, songs and fun. This week is "Be My Valentine!"

Bubbles and Bounces (for ages to 2) meet 10:30 a.m. Thursday for reading activities, finger-plays and more.

Tech Class "iPad & iPhone Level 1" meets 2 p.m. Thursday; instructor Len Angel will introduce students to the keyboard, hidden apostrophe, searching, screen shots, accessing and running apps, audio/video and playback controls. Class fee is $5, due at registration.

Central Florida Speech & Hearing gives away free amplified telephones to the hard of hearing 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Teen Advisory Board meets 4:15 p.m. Friday to help decide what happens at the library and select new books. Earns scholarship community service hours.

"Open Knitting & Crochet" meets 5:30 p.m. Friday for fiber arts fun.

Artist Don Porter teaches a four-week watercolor painting class beginning 1 p.m. Saturday. $90 fee for class, supplies list available at registration. Instruction provided is for all skill levels.

Library closed Monday for staff training, operations resume Feb. 19.

The Friends of the Library offer 50 percent off all titles and VHS cassettes all week long at the Main Library.
